Joan West Fibre Random Weave Workshop

Joan brought some of her intricate sculptures with her and the forms she uses to shape them. Members had brought a wide variety of soft fibres with which to experiment. 

Joan’s sculptures are based on the Tree of Life and the feminine form. She showed us how to start the weaving using pins pushed into the form and stitching with a needle, based on a lacemaking technique. 

The texture is built up using different fibres and overlay. Mainly using a covered box as the base, members experimented with a long list of fibres and created a diverse number of samples.
